Or is it just chemicals (perchlorate, bleach-like substances) in the soil, releasing oxygen and methane depending on the amount of sunlight/heat?
How would this affect humans who set up camps in the low-elevations areas, where they could be closer to water?

I saw Leonard Nimoy speak in the 70s. As part of his presentation he showed the episode “The Devil in the Dark”, where your post title originated. He also said something that has stuck with me. He said there is nothing special about actors–they just read things that smart people wrote.

Yeah, I’ve read about that comment of his. He was from an older generation of actors that felt it wasn’t their job to suggest script changes.

I do agree that much of good SF/Fantasy TV is due to solid writing.
